When it comes to energy efficient windows, the type of glass you choose is a critical consideration. Due to the fact that the largest exposure of a window is the glass unit, it is estimated that this is where 90% of window heat loss occurs. Savvy consumers can access a ton of information at their fingertips but when researching the various types of energy-efficient glass options, actually selecting the best options for a Canadian home can be difficult. We understand the dilemma for Canadian consumers, so in this post, we’ll focus on the most energy efficient glass option: LoĒ-180ESC™
What does Low-E (Low-Emissivity) coating mean?
Low-E coating is a microscopically thin, metallic film that reflects radiant heat back to its source. By using Low-E coating, it makes homes warmer in the winter months and cooler in the summer, while reducing heating and air conditioning costs. Low-E coated windows stop approximately 40% of ultraviolet penetration.
LoĒ-180ESC™ Glass for Canada
When the weather turns bitterly cold in Canada, LoĒ-180ESC™ glass is a warm welcome to any home. LoĒ-180ESC™ is an updated version of LoĒ-180 glass and is designed to help meet the 2020 performance requirements for Energy Star® Canada. With a glass U-Factor of just 0.26 and an SHGC of 0.71, LoĒ-180ESC™ is the ideal product for passive solar applications in Canada.
Energy Efficient Glass Made for Energy Star® 2020 Requirements in Canada
LoĒ-180ESC™ is the perfect glass to be both comfortable and compliant with the 2020 requirements for Energy Star® Canada.
On, January 1, 2020, Natural Resources Canada issued a new/updated set of Energy Star® guidelines to further improve energy efficiency:
• maximum U-Factor of 1.22 (W/m²·K) / 0.21 (BTU/hr·ft²·°F)
• or minimum Energy Rating (ER) of 34 for the window or door
To comply with the updated and expanded Energy Star® Canada guidelines, the LoĒ-180ESC™ coating was developed. It’s engineered to enable more windows and doors qualify with the new energy rating of 34. The LoĒ-180ESC™ is a 3rd surface coating for a dual pane unit which allows more energy from the sun to enter the home while allowing the low U-Factor to keep the heat in.
Blocks out the cold, lets in the light
LoĒ-180ESC™ delivers outstanding cold weather performance – its insulation value is excellent. In addition, it lets the winter sun’s heat pass into the home while at the same time blocks 75% of the sun’s harmful UV rays. While blocking out the cold and UV rays, it lets the daylight stream in and provides more light than standard low-e glass.
Unique Coating Stops Thermal Loss
The glass is coated with a microscopically thin, optically transparent layer of silver sandwiched between layers of anti-reflective metal oxide coatings. A protective coating is applied to ensure durability and long life. The coating is virtually invisible to the eye – it’s like looking through clear glass.
